Undergraduate Training
Exeter College, Oxford University for pre-clinical 1980-1983. Guy’s Hospital, London for clinical 1983-1986.
Postgraduate Surgical Training
South Thames rotation with the majority of my specialist training at Guy’s Hospital with Bill Owen and Bob Mason. I also spent 15 months in Melbourne, Australia.
Consultant Post
Appointed as Consultant UGI Surgeon at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford in 1997.
AUGIS Role
Representative for Oxford and Wessex, and have recently joined the Clinical Services and Audit Committee.
Clinical Interests
My major interest is in the management of Oesophagogastric cancer and I am the clinical lead on the Oxford Oesophagogastric Unit. I also have a major interest in minimally invasive oesophagogastric surgery, particularly for reflux disease, oesophageal motility disorders and giant hiatus herniae. I am in the process of setting up a Bariatric Surgical service for Oxford.
Research interests
My MS Thesis was spent on the ICU at Guy’s Hospital researching into gut and liver blood flow in the critically ill. I am involved in clinical oesophageal cancer research in Oxford in conjunction with cancer Research UK.
Other roles
I chair the Oxford UGI MDT, and also the Cancer Network UGI TSSG. I am on the faculty of the College D2 gastrectomy (and recently oesophagectomy) course.
Interests
Rugby (originally playing, now watching as much as possible), running (2 full marathons so far) and cycling. I love music, reading and wine and travelling to the South West of Ireland every summer.
