Clinical Audits - Introduction

AUGIS is part of the group of organisations that has been tasked by the Healthcare Commission with auditing the overall quality of care for oesophago-gastric cancer in England and Wales.

The main component of the project is a 15 month prospective study, which is examining both the process and outcomes of care of all patients (both curative and palliative) diagnosed in England and Wales between 1st October 2007 and 31st December 2008. Other components include a quality of life and patient satisfaction study, an organisational survey and an analysis of existing databases.

AUGIS is represented on the project team by Richard Hardwick (Consultant Surgeon in Cambridge and Chair of the AUGIS Clinical Services and Audit Committee).

Clinical Audits

Oesophago-Gastric Cancer Audit

The audit will measure the quality of care received by patients with oesophago-gastric cancer in the UK. The main audit questions examine the timescale of the process of care from referral to initial treatment, determinants of treatment and outcomes, the proportion of patients treated palliatively and its determinants, and short-term outcomes of surgical treatment as well as survival and health status at 1 year. Finally, the audit will examine patient satisfaction with care and quality of life.
