| Surgisis is a biologic prosthesis which remodels into strong, soft human tissue. A recent study, Biologic Prosthesis Reduces Recurrence After Laparoscopic Paraoesophageal Hernia by Oelschlager et al (Ann Surg 2006;244: 481–490) studied the value of Surgisis in reducing recurrence rates without the dysphagia and erosions possible with synthetic mesh. 57 patients underwent primary repair and 51 were buttressed with SIS. At 6 months, 4 patients (9%) developed a recurrent hernia in the SIS group and 12 patients (24%) in the 1° group. It was concluded that a biologic prosthesis reduces recurrence at 6 months, without mesh-related complications. |
