To highlight the continuing problem posed by iatrogenic bile duct injuries occurring during the performance of cholecystectomy in the UK, identify the reasons why, the steps to avoid it, what to do when it is suspected, the medico-legal implications for patients, doctors and hospitals, and finally, define who should be undertaking this procedure.
