Mr Myrddin Rees
MS FRCS FRCSEd
Established 11 years ago our organisation represents over 600 surgeons, surgical trainees and affiliated specialist nurses who care for disease of the oesophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver and biliary tract. It is our mission statement to provide best evidence based care of both benign and malignant conditions affecting all these organs.
These goals are achieved through teaching, research and audit, and focused around our annual meeting. Following on from our highly successful combined meeting with the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association held in Edinburgh in September 2006 we are delighted to report that our annual meeting in Cardiff a year later attracted a record number of abstracts which was matched by 420 registered delegates ~ another record. The future of AUGIS is now assured.
The strength of AUGIS is the amalgamation of all our different specialist interests under one umbrella, whilst still encouraging the pursuit of individual goals. Oesophago-gastric, bariatric, pancreatic, hepatobiliary specialists may on the surface appear to be a disparate grouping but we are bonded by the need for our upper GI trainees to gain experience in all these sub-specialties. In addition all upper GI specialists are required to have a working knowledge of all these topics. Hence the first day of our annual meeting is aimed at cross fertilisation of ideas from our four main areas. In contrast the second day is typically sub-divided to allow parallel sessions for more focused specialist work. The addition of an affiliate session is welcomed as they are vital members of our multi-disciplinary teams ~ their seat at our table is well deserved and long overdue.
Audit continues to feature highly and we are delighted to support Richard Hardwick in the Department of Health sponsored audit of outcomes of patients with oesophago-gastric cancers. David Berry is leading our proposed audit of surgery for cancers of the liver and pancreas and Richard Welbourn is establishing a national audit for bariatric surgery. These activities together with the AUGIS Fellowships launched in 2007, are a direct result of support from our corporate partners. Our relationship with our sponsors is maturing as we all work towards a common goal of improved outcomes for patients ~ we do thank all our corporate sponsors that have been so generous in their support.
Through this Website we are determined to inform both medical professionals, patients and industry of our activity and aspirations. I invite you therefore to learn more by browsing through this Website. As ever, any feedback will be warmly appreciated.
