Consultant Surgeon, Northumbria Healthcare, based at North Tyneside Hospital and an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Surgery at Newcastle University. I specialise in Upper Gastrointestinal, Minimal Invasive and Hernia surgery.
I have a research interest in foregut disease. I am also interested in the relationship of gastro-oesophageal reflux, Barrett’s and adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus. I am a committee member of a number of major national and international trials – ASPECT , LOTUS, BOSS and COGNATE. I helped to establish the identity and treatment of the new disease of Eosinophilic Oesophagitis and I have an interest in guidelines for peptic ulcer bleeding, oesophageal stricture dilatation and anti-reflux surgery.
I am also interested in research in education both at undergraduate level and post graduate particularly in laparoscopic surgery including the methods of teaching and training in laparoscopic techniques as part of the NUGITS faculty of Northumbria.
Regional Representative North & Yorks
I am an advisor to NICE and to the HTA programme of the UK, a Senior Faculty Member of the National Institute of Health Research NIHR, and a member of the faculty of the United European Gastroenterology Week, International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus and the British Society of Gastroenterology with a commitment to liaising between surgeons and physicians on matters relating to Upper Gastrointestinal disease.
