The MIO Conference
The Minimally Invasive Oesophagectomy Conference
AUGIS and ALS members came together on March 14th at The Ark in Basingstoke
to discuss and agree a consensus on the way forward with safely introducing Minimally Invasive Oesophagectomy (MIO) into clinical practice. The meeting was sponsored by generous educational grants from Ethicon Endosurgery and Covidien and organised by Juliet Crawley of The Pelican Cancer Foundation.
Fifty surgeons attended representing a range of views about MIO from enthusiasts to sceptics and enjoyed an excellent dinner the evening before. The group listened to a series of presentations in the morning which covered the nationally available data on MIO from the MIGOCS project, lessons learned from the Exeter and Reading groups and some "ru minations" from our visiting sage, Professor Glyn Jamieson from Adelaide. We then separated into four smaller breakout groups and discussed the big issues before returning after lunch for a distillation of ideas.
Consensus documents for Professionals and another for Patients are now in production and will be made available soon, including on this and the ALS's website.
