Siobhan McKay is the AUGIS Trainee representative. Visit the dedicated AUGISt website to find out more news and training opportunities.

Firstly, thank you to all AUGIS trainees for electing me as your trainee representative on AUGIS Council, and President of AUGISt.  It has long been felt that there is more that could be done to enhance upper GI trainees’ education, engagement and research opportunities, to a similar level of allied specialty trainee organisations.  I believe that by working together and harnessing the enthusiasm of all upper GI trainees we can achieve great things as a trainee organisation.

Through lively twitter and face-to-face discussions at conferences, meetings, and teaching days I’ve tried to canvas as much opinion of what trainees want from AUGISt moving forward. The take home messages were: increased transparency of how to get involved with AUGISt; national and regional training days; an annual training weekend; a new and improved website for AUGIS trainees providing information on best-practice, fellowships, and training; and opportunities to get involved with National UGI research.

Since my appointment we have formed an interim Committee of enthusiastic UGI trainees spanning all subspecialties and regions, to re-boot the trainee organisation. We felt it was necessary to revitalise and rebrand AUGISt into a group that is fully encompassing of and unites all the UGI subspecialties.  We therefore decided to rebrand AUGISt to the Roux Group, as the formation of a Roux loop is synonymous with OG, Bariatrics and HPB surgery.  This rebrand was fully supported by the AUGIS Council at the AGM in September 2018.  We will continue to be aligned with AUGIS, and be represented in the AUGIS Council, with an aim to increase the trainee voice at all levels of the organisation.

Roux Group Objectives

  • We will engage with trainee members via educational events throughout the year designed to target various aspects of the upper GI curriculum and promote networking and collaboration amongst its members to promote excellence in the field.
  • We will work directly with AUGIS-affiliated associations, such as BOMSS and GBIHPBA, to maximise opportunities for its members and align its activities with these organisations, and ensure the trainee voice is heard.
  • We will promote upper GI surgery as a career for medical students, foundation doctors and core trainees, to increase the uptake of the specialty and support their career progression.
  • We will organise an annual training weekend for members to enhance education and training, and provide an opportunity for a social get together at the Gala Dinner following the AGM.
  • The Roux Group Committee to be elected in a democratic and transparent process at the Annual Roux Group Weekend.

The inaugural Roux Weekend was held on 9-10th March 2019, at Chesford Grange, Kenilworth.  Jen Barrie and the rest of the committee worked tirelessly to develop an excellent programme, with expert national and international speakers, including: subspecialty updates, with a presentation from Professor Jens Werner, Munich, on pancreatic cancer; a lively dinner debate; a fellowship session; future-gazing for OG and HPB; and a Keynote presentation on Robotic Surgery from Olivier Saint-Marc from Orleans, France.  We hope to run a similar event next year so look out for further details over the next few months.

Following the Roux Weekend we will hold elections for the Roux Committee, with an opportunity for online voting for those that cannot attend the Roux Weekend.

The Interim Roux Committee  have put in an enormous effort over the last few months to update the website (major update in progress), update the constitution and voting process, organise the highly successful Roux Weekend, and develop a database of UK fellowships, to name but a few of their activities.  I foresee very bright things for the Roux Group and all its members for 2019, and this would not be possible without their hard work and support.

Best wishes,
