South Thames/South London

Kirstin Carswell

Having worked in the region whilst undertaking research in metabolic surgery and advanced laparoscopic and bariatric fellowship, I became a Consultant UGI surgeon at East Surrey Hospital in 2019.

Within the three years, I would aim to increase regional activity in patient, surgeon and hospital centred outcomes and experience projects, with a view to developing our services together with our trainees and AHPs. Encouraging close communication, enhancing membership and developing training opportunities within our region, whilst ensuring our requirements and concerns are heard.

Summer Update

Firstly, I’d like to say hello to everyone as this is my first report in this role. I have been a consultant UGI surgeon at East Surrey Hospital since 2019, following Oesophago-Gastric Higher surgical training in the West of Scotland and a bariatric surgical fellowship at King’s College Hospital. I have a keen interest in research, having achieved my PhD in metabolic changes around gastric bypass surgery and completing the NIHR reviewer development scheme.

Our region has multiple hospitals, offering our patients and trainees all our sub-speciality interests including OG and HPB malignancy (resectional and palliative), bariatric and metabolic disease, benign biliary and anti-reflux management, robotics and therapeutic endoscopy. It is a large diverse region, spanning from South London to the Coast, with multiple differing interests available in our field. I hope to bring our units closer together, increasing clinical links and research interests, over the next few years. Through close working, we will consolidate our strengths and grow cohesively together. I look forward to meeting you all in the near future.
